계급이 무서워서가 아니라 말씀때문입니다.

평소 신앙이  좋기로 소문난  황 문현이라는 청년이 군에 입대를 했습니다.
70년대 80년대에는 취침 전에 QT(취침 전 묵상)을 가졌습니다. 이때 상황실 마이크를 통해 성경을 간단히 읽어주고  기도를 해주었습니다. 그리고 병사들은 잠 들었습니다.
황문현 이병은  자대배치 되는  첫날부터  매일 매일 큰 소리로 내무반에서 성경을 읽고 읽어주었습니다.
고참 들은  군기가 빠져서 그렇다며  괴롭히고 조롱하고 폭행을 일삼았습니다. 그렇지만 여전히 성경을 읽고 읽어주었습니다.  몇 달이 지나자  내무반 사람들이  말씀을  듣기 시작했습니다. 그들의 삶이 고달프고 외롭고  답답했기 때문에 말씀은  그들에게  위로가 되었던 것입니다.   더 시간이 지나자  그들은   성경 읽어주는 시간을 기다렸습니다.  점차 굳어졌던 병사들의 얼굴은 부드러워졌고 말씨는 친절해졌으며 웃는 사람도 생기기 시작했습니다. 
어느 날  병사들의 요청으로  말씀을 읽어주는 시간이 30분 넘게 길어졌습니다. 갑자기   중대 인사를 담당하는 중사가  술에 잔뜩 취해  들이닥쳐   황문현 이병을  폭행하고 침을 뱉고 욕을 하면서 왜 취침시간인데 취침하지 않느냐며  한참 동안  분위가 삭막해졌습니다. 그러나  황문현 이병은 "참으로 죄송합니다. 감사합니다."라며   조금도  당황하지 않으면서도 기풍 있고 겸손하게  중사에게 말했습니다.
그러고 엉망인   복장과 흙투성이 된  군화를  신은 채  중사는 꼬꾸라져 잠들었습니다.
황문현이병은  조용히   중사의  전투화와  군복을  벗겨    군화는 깨끗하게 닦아놓고  옷은  잘 다려서 가지런히  개어  정리해 놓고 자기 자리에 돌아가 잠들었습니다.
다음날 새벽에   갑자기 전쟁이나 비상이  발생했을 때를 가정해서  신속하게 자기 무장을 갖춰서  출동하는 훈련인 '준비태세'가 발령되었습니다.
각자 자기 무장하고 챙길것 챙긴다고 야단났는데  잠에서 깬 중사는 군 생활했던 관록으로  거의 눈을 감은 채 빠른 솜씨로 자기 물건 챙기고  연병장으로  나갔는데   날이 훤해지면서  앞줄에 서 있는 자신의 엉망인  복장과 군화가 생각나자   걱정이 되기 시작했습니다.  한 사람 한 사람  대대장이 확인해오자  발로 채이고  계급이 강등될까봐 사시나무 떨리듯 떨고  있는데   자기 앞에 다가온 대대장이 "잘 꾸렸구만 "하고 지나갔습니다. 속으로 운수대통 했다 생각하고 대대장의 점검이 끝나고  각자 위치로 가라는 말과 함께  자기 자신의  군화와 군복이 깨끗함을  알았습니다. 내무반 병사들에게 누가   닦아놓았는지를 물었습니다.
자기가 욕하고  폭행했던   황문현 이병이라는 것을 알았습니다. 그는  황문현 이병을  그 때부터  친절하게 대했으며  성경 읽는 시간에  귀를 기울여 듣고 예수님을 영접하는 사람이 되었습니다.
황문현 이병은  계급에 따른 군기 때문에  폭행을 참아가며  군화를 닦아주고 옷을 다려주는  섬김을 하고  사랑한 것이 아니었습니다. 하나님 말씀에 따라  실천을 한 것입니다. 그는  얼마후에   연대를 책임지는 군종병으로 발탁이 되어 부대의 기독교를 책임지는 자가 되었습니다.  그의 얼굴에는  늘 승리자의 습관인  주님안에서  할 수 있다라는  자신감이 베어 있었습니다.
믿음의 역사는 환경에 따를 때  생기는 것이 아니고   주님의 말씀을 따라 사랑하고 섬길 때에 역사가 일어납니다.  주어진 환경 때문에  힘들고 어렵습니까? 이기십시오. 자신의 자존심과 교만과 옛 습관을  이기면   환경을 지배할 수 있습니다. 이기는 도구는  하나님의 말씀대로  순종하는 것입니다.
Not due to fear of the rank, but because of the Word of God.

A faithful young men, Hwang MoonHyun was admitted to military. During the 70s and 80s, before the lights out the military used to have QT (Bible devotion)for them, which consisted of reading Bible that ended with short prayer, operated by the Dispatch Broadcast Room. Only then the soldiers were asleep.
Private Hwang MoonHyun would read out loud the Bible to his fellow comrade in his military living quarters from the day he was assigned to a specific platoon. His seniors mocked him and abused him physically, mentally, and emotionally, stating that Private Hwang lacked the military bearing. Nonetheless, Private Hwang kept reading the Bible verses to his comrades every night. Lo and behold, the comrades started to listen to the Word of God as months passed. It was because the Bible provided comfort to the comrades who were lonely, frustrated, and a mess. Soon, they waited for private Hwang to read the Bible, as their faces became softer and tones nicer, with a few who even started to smile frequently.
One day, the Bible reading was extended past 30 minutes due to the request of the comrades. Suddenly, a drunken officer in charge of First Responder Team, came out of nowhere and started to spit, curse, and violently abuse private Hwang for not sleeping even when it is supposed to be lights out. The atmosphere of the quarter became heavy and desolated. However, private Hwang humbly and with manner stated “I am truly sorry, and thank you.”
The officer, with messy uniform and dirty boots still on, fell asleep on the spot.
Still, private Hwang quietly undressed the officer to his undergarments, shined the boots, and folded the clothes neatly before going to his spot and falling asleep.
Early next dawn, the civil defense siren -commonly used in military to help soldiers practice pack up the sea bag with all the gears in case of war or emergency rang.
The officer, who woke up in midst of the rush and chaos of everyone gathering their gears, quickly gathered his own gears with his eyes closed most of the time. As daylight started to break, remembering his messy uniform and dirty boots from a night before, the officer began to be worried. As battalion commander started to check one person at a time, the officer began to tremble with fear that he would be demoted and beat. Yet, the battalion commander simply uttered “well maintenance” to the officer and moved on. The officer thought that he was extremely lucky until the platoon was dismissed. Once he realized his clean boots and uniform, he asked the comrades in living quarter who have washed and prepared his uniform.
Ever since he found out that it was private Hwang, who he had cursed and beat, the officer became generous and nicer to the private as he listened sincerely during the QT. And, ultimately, he accepted Jesus Christ.
Private Hwang did not endure the violence, and cleaned and washed boots and uniform due to unfaultable rank difference. Rather, he obeyed what the Word of God stated. Soon, private
